Dia de los muertos
The 'altar' is the most representative part of the traditional
celebration of the Day of the Death. Its purpose is to act as a beacon
for the souls of the those who've departed and who journey back into the
realm of the living on the eve of November 2nd. It is customary to
include everyday objects that were part of the lives of the relatives
beings honored as part of these altars, also called offerings-ofrendas.
The elements of the altar represent the four elements in nature.
Earth represented by the flowers and fruits.
Wind represented by the tablecloths and the cut out tissue paper – papel picado.
Fire represented by the candles.
Water represented by itself.
