Its purpose is to act as a beacon for the souls of the those who've departed and who journey back into the realm of the living on the eve of November 2nd. It is customary to include everyday objects that were part of the lives of the relatives beings honored as part of these altars, also called offerings-ofrendas.
The elements of the altar represent the four elements in nature.
